A team cannot be fielded if there is no volunteer to serve as the coach. Each year there is some scrambling to recruit a sufficient number of coaches for all the teams. This occasionally leads to unfortunate delays that negatively impact the experience for our young participants. Many of the coaches have not had any soccer experience prior to coaching, so do not let the lack of experience deter you.
The NJSL views its coaches as vital to the continued success of the league and works hard to recruit coaches and to make available to coaches many instructional tools to develop and improve their skills. We hold a coaching clinic prior to the start of every NJSL season. This session is directed by a veteran NJSL coach. The NJSL provides books on coaching and tactics as well as access to the Challenger coaching website. If needed, experienced NJSL coaches and Board members can provide on-field help to new coaches for the first practice sessions plus provide help on organizing and planning practices.
Contact an NJSL Board member if you are coaching and need some help getting started.
IMPORTANT NOTE: “Coach” is a noun without gender. Spouses and friends of coaches and assistants can fill in as required and make a big difference in how a practice turns out. Participate and learn the sport with the kids.
